Labor rule documents, 1874-1875.

Initially, the college required every student to work three hours daily on the farm. On 29 July 1874, the Board of Trustees charged the faculty with assigning students to work details relevant to courses of study ("practicums") and to use labor as punishment. The faculty drafted an undated resolution opposing the labor system. On 13 January 1875, fifty-six students petitioned the Board of Trustees to abolish the labor rule. On 15 November 1875, Col. Arthur Edward Grabowskii wrote to president James Calder opposing the labor rule and his views were concurred with by William A. Buckhout and J. F. Downey. This labor rule was then abolished as shown in the circular of 1874/75 detailing the general plan of instruction.
